The First Dental Examination Should Be Done When the First Baby Tooth Erupts

A child’s first dental visit should take place as soon as the first baby tooth erupts. The initial appointment is intended solely for examination, and parents should briefly explain the process to the child beforehand. Parents must avoid transferring their own fears or anxieties to the child. Parental support is crucial to help the child communicate directly and comfortably with the pediatric dentist (pedodontist). The clinic environment should be designed to reduce fear and anxiety. Dental chairs and instruments can seem intimidating to children, so introducing and familiarizing them with the equipment beforehand is important. For example, describing the water spray as a “fountain,” explaining that it doesn’t cause pain, or comparing the suction device to an “elephant’s trunk” can help ease tension. As the child’s trust in the pedodontist and the environment grows, the examination and treatment process becomes much smoother and more comfortable.

Baby Teeth Should Be Preserved Until Permanent Teeth Erupt

The formation of a baby’s first teeth begins around the 12th week of pregnancy. Baby teeth are important for nutrition, speech, and aesthetics. They also maintain the space needed for permanent teeth and guide them during eruption. The first baby teeth typically appear between 4 and 18 months, and the full set of 20 baby teeth is usually completed between 24 and 36 months. Replacement of baby teeth starts around age 6, while the molars, which play a key role in chewing, are replaced around age 12. To ensure healthy nutrition during active growth and development, baby molars must remain healthy and functional. Treating baby teeth to preserve them until their natural shedding time is essential for maintaining oral health. It should always be remembered that overall health begins with oral health.

Treatments Performed Under Anesthesia Eliminate Dental Anxiety in Children

Once the condition of the baby teeth is diagnosed, appropriate treatment options are determined. The key factor in deciding the treatment approach is whether the child can cooperate with the pediatric dentist during the procedure. In cases where cooperation may be difficult, performing the dental treatment under day-case general anesthesia can significantly improve treatment success. These procedures are carried out in fully equipped healthcare facilities where the child’s overall health is evaluated beforehand.

During dental treatment under day-case anesthesia, fear, anxiety, and gag reflexes are eliminated, allowing procedures to be completed comfortably and safely. All types of dental treatments can be performed under anesthesia, helping to improve the child’s cooperation with dental procedures and reducing long-term dental anxiety.
