Since 1993, the Cardiovascular Surgery team at Güven Hospital has successfully performed numerous operations—mostly without touching the aorta, without stopping the heart (thereby minimizing surgical risks), and without harvesting veins from the leg (to ensure longer graft durability).
Since 1998, under the leadership of Dr. Haldun Karagöz, the Cardiovascular Surgery team at Güven Hospital has been performing coronary bypass surgeries on awake patients. The Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass (MIDCAB) procedure represents a less invasive surgical method for treating coronary artery disease. Compared to traditional techniques, MIDCAB allows surgical access to the heart through a much smaller incision, earning it the nickname “keyhole surgery.” The “beating heart” or “off-pump” coronary artery bypass technique is performed without using a heart–lung machine, which normally takes over the heart and lung functions during conventional bypass operations. By performing the surgery on the beating heart, patients are spared the potential risks associated with cardiopulmonary bypass.
